Sant Ferran Castle
Located on a hill at the end of the street “Pujada del Castell”, is a large military fortification built during the 18th century under the orders of various military engineers, such as Pedro M. Cermeño and Juan M. Cermeño. It occupies an area of 32 hectares with a perimeter of 3,120 metres, and contains several tanks located under the parade ground that held 10 million litres of water. Sant Ferran castle, which had a capacity for 6,000 men, now constitutes an outstanding patrimonial legacy, the monument with the most extensive dimensions in Catalonia, and the largest 18th century fortress with ramparts in the whole of Europe.
In July 1997 it was opened to the public, on a regular basis, with a service of guided tours to show the characteristics of the fortress. Due to its enormous dimensions, its sophisticated construction techniques applied within the military engineering of the time and its excellent state of conservation, a visit to Sant Ferran Castle provides a unique experience.
